Is Porn Realistic?| Jane Unbound

Most have seen it—but is porn realistic? For many women, especially those discovering their sexual identity or reclaiming confidence, porn can distort what sex actually looks and feels like. In this blog, we explore how mainstream porn compares to real-life intimacy, and how to build a healthier, more empowered view of your sexuality.

If you have ever watched pornography, you might have asked yourself, is this how people really have sex?

Depending on what kind of porn you watched, the answer might seem murkier than others. The short answer is that porn is not realistic. Some performers use tools like water devices to convey that they are squirting. There are also performers who act in the scenes, before, during, and after the main event. Depending on the studio, you might see performances that are more genuine than others. Some performers use pumps and aids to enlarge their penis and to last as long as they do.

If you are expecting yourself or someone else to perform like a porn star then you are setting up yourself up for unrealistic expectations. Does that mean that you can’t have a better sex life than you see in porn? Of course not. If you are with a person or people who you trust and everyone respects everyone’s boundaries, sex will always be better. If you find someone interested in your particular kinks, it can make sex adventurous and fun. Sometimes the best times during sex is when you can be silly and there is no pressure to act or perform perfectly.

When you express your boundaries and respect the other person/s boundaries, sex can be refreshing, fun, and satisfying. For example, if you think that you have to call someone king or that you will be called king, the pressure to do it or the unrealistic expectations might leave you feeling disappointed or anxious.

Porn is entertainment and is not realistic. Porn can add to your sex life if you choose to use it that way, but it should not be set as the blueprint for how your session will go.
