Sex Ed You Should Have Gotten in School

How many of us attended sex education in school? We might have gotten a variety of experiences. I attended mine in middle school, and they talked about how we were getting older and were going to smell, so we needed to put on deodorant. They then handed us sample size deodorants. Boom! That was my sex ed class. Why did I need a permission slip for that?

Most schools, if they even teach sex education, teach abstinence. Is that really realistic, though? Whether teens are taught to abstain or not, chances are, some teens are going to have sex. Shouldn’t we be taught to have safer sex? It’s wrong for society to shame teens who get STIs and unwanted pregnancies when they were never given the tools to avoid this. It’s like handing a teenager keys to a car without even introducing them to how to operate it, and the seat belt is cut out. How are we supposed to go into having sex as responsible people when the adults in our lives are uncomfortable with the topic of sex themselves?

Teaching abstinence leads to more unplanned pregnancies than education programs that teach safer sex by using protection and birth control.

Schools also tend to only promote heteronormative teachings. Same sex relationships and traditional gender roles are expressed in these classes. They leave out people who do not identify as “straight“ or cisgender. This can lead to isolation, psychological problems, self-hate, bullying, and more.

Even though you are an adult and not in middle or high school anymore, does that mean that you don’t have the right to proper sex education?
